Prologue

An overly large areola that is out of proportion with the breast, along with the bumps around it, can be an aesthetic concern and may also involve a functional issue. Areola reduction can address cosmetic concerns such as size, shape, and scarring. The small bumps around the areola are called Montgomery glands, or Montgomery tubercles; they secrete an oily fluid that protects the skin of the areola.
However, if drainage is poor it may enlarge or become inflamed, so removal may be considered.
